The following was posted on our website in November 2016 after the sad death of Wade Hewett
Vale Wade Llankesbury Hewett 1940 – 2016
Wade was an exceptional person, not only professionally but as a friend. With an enviable reputation as a commercial lawyer, commercial litigator and employment lawyer, Wade’s practice was very broad, encompassing most areas of commercial endeavour as well as addressing the personal legal service needs of his clients, who range from listed corporate entities to individuals. Always focussing on practical solutions for his clients, many of Wade’s clients became his friends over the years and, in a number of cases, several generations of the same family have entrusted their legal work to Wade, knowing his unwavering commitment to achieving the best outcomes for his clients. Wade was a generous mentor and was much admired and respected by all those he worked with over the course of his career, particularly those young lawyers whose careers he assisted to foster and develop.
After initially undertaking RAAF Reserve officer training whilst at Sydney University studying Law, Wade continued to serve as an active officer in the RAAF Reserve for a number of years, rising in rank to Wing Commander and Head of the Sydney Legal panel. That panel of officers provided legal services to serving RAAF personnel, the RAAF itself, and amongst many duties, appeared in Courts Martial.
Outside of the law, Wade was heavily involved in rowing and took a lead role in the teams he helped to manage and support, particularly with Pymble Ladies College (of which Wade was also a staunch supporter generally) and Leichhardt Rowing Club. Wade was also instrumental in making the connection between the school and the club, to the great benefit of both. Although his involvement with the sport in recent years had reduced, Wade is still known throughout the rowing community for his dedication and commitment to those athletes, and in fact he recently remarked that while he could not stand watching organised sports, rowing was an exception to that rule. Over the years, Wade’s rowing involvement included successfully encouraging many parents to row in mature age regattas on the weekend, out of the Leichardt club shared by PLC with the club, so as to help those parents understand the commitment their children had to make to rowing and also of course for the benefit of the parents’ exercise regimes.
In addition to his work and his contribution to PLC and to rowing, Wade was a dedicated family man and was very proud of the achievements of Vicki and his children, not missing an opportunity to tell his colleagues, clients and friends about each of their successes.
We also acknowledge the immense contribution of Vicki Neal, who has been Wade’s assistant for many years and has closely assisted Wade and his family both professionally and personally throughout the course of his illness, enabling Wade to choose to continue working until very recently despite his deteriorating health.
Our firm and many in the legal profession will greatly miss Wade. However, please be assured our firm’s commitment to serving our clients remains unchanged.
